Roller shutter or roller door - which do you actually need?
They get used to mean the same thing, but they’re built differently, and the difference decides what your money buys.
A roller shutter is made from individual interlocking slats — usually galvanised steel or heavy aluminium — that lock together and run in side tracks. That construction makes it heavier, stiffer and far harder to force, and it can span much wider openings. It’s the right choice for commercial security: shop fronts, warehouses, industrial units. A useful side benefit is repairability — if a slat gets damaged, that section can often be replaced on its own rather than swapping the whole curtain.
A roller door is a single continuous sheet of lighter corrugated steel or an insulated panel that coils above the opening. It’s lighter, faster and cheaper, which makes it ideal for domestic garages and lower-security everyday use — but it doesn’t offer the same resistance to a determined break-in.

Foam-filled slats that add thermal and acoustic performance. Worth it for temperature-controlled units, cold stores, and any premises where you’re paying to heat or cool the space behind the door.
Fire shutters
Fire-rated shutters that hold back fire and smoke for a set period and integrate with the building’s alarm system. Required in specific commercial and industrial settings — we’ll tell you if your building needs one.
Perforated & vision shutters
Part-open slats or built-in vision panels for retail frontages that want security overnight while still showing the window display. All available in electric or manual operation, with a choice of galvanised and powder-coated finishes — corrosion resistance and a colour that suits the building, rather than raw steel.

It depends on the opening size, the slat spec, whether it’s electric or manual, and any insulation or fire rating. Made-to-measure means there’s no single list price — a small manual shop-front shutter and a large insulated warehouse door are worlds apart. Ours start from around £999. Send us the opening size and use, and we’ll quote an accurate figure.
Honestly, they cost more than a lightweight roller door, they’re heavier, and powered ones need an annual service and a professional install to stay safe and compliant. For high-security commercial use that trade-off is worth it. For a low-risk domestic garage, a cheaper roller door is often the more sensible choice — and we’ll tell you when that’s the case.
